BERLIN Smithsonian Magazine, June 2006
After reunification of east and west, Germany quickly moved to re-establish Berlin as the nation's capital. A task easier said than done, the two Berlins represented very different worlds. Today, the results of this effort are impressive but much is still to be completed. A visit to Berlin reveals two communities that are slowly becoming one; and running like a thread through the city are the remains of the very thing that seperated them, the Berlin Wall. In April of 2006 I traveled to Berlin to shoot a story for Smithsonian Magazine. My coverage included many of the city's landmarks and some of its notable residents; from artists and immigrants to politicians and the former head of the East German Stasi. |
