THE ZUNI Smithsonian Magazine, May 2007

As one of the most traditional Native American groups in the country, the Zuni of western New Mexico have managed to successfully combine centuries-old beliefs and practices with the dictates of the modern world. While tribal members may conduct sacred ceremonies one day they may work for high-tech industries the next. And, while Zuni artisans produce works of art that reflect countless generations of creative input they are savvy business persons when it comes to marketing their creations. In 2006 I made three trips to Zuni to photograph a story for Smithsonian Magazine. And, while Zuni religious ceremonies were off limits to photography, the annual tribal fair provided plenty of opportunity to capture the color and venerable beauty of their world.
